Human activities have already caused about a 1°C in global warming compared with a pre-industrial baseline. The 2015 UN Paris Agreement, signed by 194 member states, set out the goal of limiting global climate change to 1.5°C. Although the effects of climate change are on a continuum, they are not linear - scientists from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)estimate that many of our natural systems will reach a tipping point around 1.5°C, causing an acceleration of detrimental impacts. According to the IPCC, the only way to avoid crossing this line is to cut fossil fuel emissions in half by 2030. Bold action is needed now.
